Before we start this study, I would like to say that I do not claim to be sinless, nor perfect in the flesh. On the contrary I acknowledge that sin dwells in me and I cannot escape its claws. Rom 7:18 "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”
But the fact that I am sinful is good, because it leaves me no room but to look up to the Mercy and Grace of God and have nothing to boast about; (Eph 2:9) "Not of works, lest any man should boast".
Furthermore, I find that He indeed is Merciful and Gracious to me and condemned sin in the flesh for me so that I might be free from it and its condemnation.
Rom 8:3 “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”
God starts Romans chapter 2 talking to the natural man (that is the human side of us). He addresses it as O man! Or “O wretched man that I am!” Rom. 7:24.
Rom 2:1 “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for where in thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.”
I used to think this was talking to “them”, not to me. So I was going around judging others based on their actions, because I was “not doing the same things”, after all did not Paul judged a man in I Corinthians 5 for fornication, but now I am not sure if it was indeed an act of physical fornication or spiritual fornication that was being committed in Corinthians, but that is another subject. The thing is Jesus said it plainly in;
Matt.7:1-5
“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam [is] in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.”
We excuse ourselves when we judge others saying that we have to “correct” our brother from his folly or that we are just making “righteous judgements”.
Most definitely, I will not judge any man´s actions, in relation to their spirituality, the only thing I am to judge is the words that come out of their mouth, to see whether they be true or lie.
Romans 2:2 “But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.”
That is what God means when He says “judge righteous judgment.” John 7:24.
The judgment of God is according to truth. You either have it or you don’t. And you can judge if somebody else has it or not, nothing to do with the flesh.
Rom 2:3 “And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?”
We might think, well I do not do those things, but God says you do the same. He means you also break the physical law, so we are law breakers just like them. That is why Jesus said, in Mat 7:5 "...but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” He excluded us all from judging another person's behaviour.
We have a beam in our eye! Wow, that is our sinful nature, the sin that dwells in us, the torn in the flesh that we cannot get rid of, and it does not matter what kind of sin it is we commit, it is enough to condemn us, there is no difference to God, we are all law breakers, and I repeat that is good because;
Rom 3:19 "Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.”
Therefore, we acknowledge our condition and have no place to look but to God for help and Mercy.
Now, God is painting a spiritual picture for us when He says, “thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God”.
He’s talking to the “Called out” or “Called to be saints” chapter 1 verses 6-7, most likely the church people who usually have good outward behavior, especially the elders, teachers, deacons, ministers at the church, people like the Pharisees. It is like Jesus is saying to them, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!”.
Why is God talking like that to them? Is it because they’re out there stealing, getting drunk, killing or doing things? No, the Pharisees are ethical, well behave. Yes you might have one here or there that is caught doing something outside the ordinary but most of them are“clean on the outside”, their problem is with the inside. Mat 23:25 “…. for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess”.
They might be judging somebody for some outwardly sin but spiritually they are killing everybody else with their spiritual lies.
Eze 34:3 “Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock”. That is what these lying pastors do with their flock, so God is saying to them that they kill the flock.
We break the physical law, at least I do, so we are law breakers just like them, “thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?” Therefore, whether we are spiritual or physical we are not to judge their actions period, or we will not escape the judgment of God.
Rom 2:4 “Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?”
Said another way “but I am carnal, sold under sin.” Rom. 7:14, “but sin that dwelleth in me.” Rom.7:17, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not.” Rom. 7:18.
Rom 2:5 “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;”
No comment! Very plain, no repentance, judgment and condemnation.
Rom 2:6 “Who will render to every man according to his deeds:”
It sounds like we will get paid for every little thing that we do, every action or thought, but we will see in the next verses that we either do good or we do evil, we are either wheat or tare.
Rom 2:7 “To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:”
Rom 2:8 “But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,”
How do I obey the truth, if the truth is Christ, a Spirit? And “I am carnal, sold under sin”.
Only as I am born again I obey the truth. In 1 John 1:6 it says that we do the truth, “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:"
But when we get born again of the Spirit “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” I John 3:9.
This is when I obey the truth and sin not, in fact I cannot sin, because I am born of God.
Rom 2:9 “Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;”
We all do evil, “For the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.” Rom. 7:19. God is talking about the SOUL not the flesh, “the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” Ezekiel 18:4.
The sin is spiritual, no believing God, calling Him a liar, that is doing evil.
Rom 2:10 “But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:”
Again, I can not work good, only Jesus can do that, “[there is] none good but one, [that is], God:” Matt. 19:17
Rom2:11 “For there is no respect of persons with God.”
God is not respecter of persons, He saves blacks, whites, child, old, Colombians, Americans, rich, poor, men and women as He pleases.
Rom2:12 “For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;”
Those without the law are the Non-Christians. We know this because verse 14 calls them Gentiles, so they do not have the law but sin and will perish, and those that are in the law are the “Christians” that are under the law, living by the law, they will also perish because they are judged by the law and come short of fulfilling it, therefore are found guilty. Their sentence is; “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt. 7:23
Rom 2:13 “(For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.”
The doers of the law, that is a big statement, because fleshly we can not keep the law unto justification, “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20
So who are the doers of the law? The children of God, because they are born of God. For the law is Spiritual. Only the spirit can do the spiritual law! Rom 7:14 "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.”
Rom 2:14 “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:”
The Gentiles, Non-Christians, do not have the law, are a law unto themselves. I would say they are not a law unto God but unto themselves.
“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” II Cor. 10-12
The works of the law are the same works of the flesh.
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness….” Gal. 5:19
If I am under the law, I will produce this kind of fruit, which is spiritual, fleshly fruit but if I am not under the law then I must be under the Spirit and the Spirit of God will produce its own fruits, which by the way are not visible because they are spiritual and are not mine for they are His, (of the Spirit).
This is what is written in 'their 'hearts and the Bible says that, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:”Matt. 15:19
Rom 2:16 “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. “
“Cowd,”H5475 is translated “assembly,” in Psalm 89:7 “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly [H5474] of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all [them that are] about him.” The word “secret,” could fit here and the way in which it is used in:
Ezekiel 13:9 “And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly [H5475] of my people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I [am] the Lord GOD.”
The word is also translated as “counsel,” in Proverbs 15:22 “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.”
“Counselors" and “Secrets” are equivalent with God’s Word. His hidden Word that can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit to His servants the prophets. Just as the word, “nothing,” in Amos 3:7 is the Hebrew word “dabar,” translated, “word” 807 times in the Old Testament.
Jeremiah 23:18 “For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard [it]?”
Jeremiah 23:22 “But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.”
We see here the relationship with “counsel.” and God’s Word, the “secret”.
Rom 2:17 “Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,”
Now the Gentiles are the Non-Christians, so the Jews are the “Carnal Christians”. They rest in the law, obedience to the law, they do not rest in the Sovereignty of God and the work of Jesus, but boast of being a child of God. This is sad, because you can not tell them otherwise, they think they know better, blind leaders of the blind.
Rom 2:18 “And knowest [his] will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;”
Being instructed out of the law? This is what they teach in the churches, you should do this and you should not do that, all obedience to the law.
Rom 2:19 “And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,”
No need for explanation!
Rom 2:20 “An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.”
Teachers, preachers, etc,. they have the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. They are very “wise”, but God says in I Cor. 1:19-21
“For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where [is] the wise? where [is] the scribe? where [is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
Rom 2:21 “Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?”
Now this is where we must be very careful because if we do not see the difference between the spiritual law and the physical law we can be falling into the same trap, remember “For we know that the law is spiritual:” Rom. 7:14.
Of course we should not steal physically but we can not steal the truth and be a child of God. God is not talking about robbing a bank or physically stealing something that is not yours. Rather, they are pictures of spiritually taking something that has not been given to you.
So what is stealing to God?
Jer. 23:30 “Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.”
When the word of God is used and twisted, we are stealing from what the hearer should be hearing. Truth is being stolen, because it is turned into a lie.
Jesus said in John 10:1 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.”
Likewise, when a man tries to enter the kingdom of heaven by a door other than the one Jesus provides, he is a thief. God gives the kingdom to whom He wills. Others are trying to spiritually steal what has not been given to them. They are trying to enter by a different doorway. Jesus is the door of the sheepfold.
John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:”
The thief is the devil and his children steal and rob.
“Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Rev.9:21
All spiritual, don't be mislead into thinking God is talking about physical stuff.
Rom 2:22 “Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?”
Same thing. all spiritual.
Rom 2:23 “Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?”
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” Matt. 23:23.
That sums it up.
Rom 2:24 “For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.”
The result of a Gospel of Salvation or Justification based on the obedience to physical law is that the name of God is blasphemed.
Rom 2:25 “For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.” Again, if we are going to live by the law we must keep the whole thing or it profits nothing.
Rom 2:26 “Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?”
True, if the spiritual, born again, keeps the law in Christ Jesus, his uncircumcision (physical) be counted for circumcision.
Rom 2:27 “And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?”
“Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world?” I Cor. 6:2
Rom 2:28 “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither [is that] circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:”
That is why God says “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”
John 7:24.
The appearance is the behavior, the actions,we are not to judge by that but by the words that come out of his mouth, either true or lie. I must make an observation at this point, the true child of God, who has the truth living in his heart, would live like a true child of God (resting in His Mercy), but living right does not make you a child of God.
Rom 2:29 “But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.” Amen!
TO GOD BE THE GLORY
